John lived with his mother in a rather big house,

نکته گرامری

too قبل از صفت و قید بدون هیچ اسمی می‌آید.
Too + adjective / adverb (no noun) We don’t see her very often. She lives too far away. ما اغلب او را نمی‌بینیم. او خیلی دور زندگی می‌کند. Turn the music down. It’s too loud!

با این وجود، too می‌توان در یک عبارت مثبت استفاده کرد:

You are too funny! تو خیلی بامزهای! این جمله در واقع به معنای “ You are so funny!”  یعنی “شما خیلی بامزه هستید!” یا “ You are very funny!” به معنی “شما خیلی خنده‌دار هستید!”  

 too نمی‌تواند بعد از ترکیب صفت+ اسم استفاده شود:

He is a too beautiful girl.
